Summer in the City

Summer has arrived in Austin!   As an Austin native, I’ve developed a number of ways to take the edge off the harshness of the Texas sun, and it’s the little things that bring a bit of sweetness to your day.

I spent a good deal of my youth protesting skirts and dresses, but was quickly converted when I wore one of my 50’s cotton dresses out on a sunny summer day; it was the most breathable piece in my wardrobe!

I’ve also spent many summers cursing at my steering wheel several months out of the year; it’s always scalding hot for a good while when I first get in my car.  Another worthwhile trick to consider is a pair of casual leather day gloves.  Nothing beats gripping that wheel with your gloves on, and not feeling a thing!

While it may seem a bit much, I have no trouble justifying my hat collection which has outgrown my shoe collection.  I’m not sure how I would manage the walk to my neighborhood coffee shop in the summers without a wide brimmed straw hat to keep the sun off my face, which is also a great way to keep looking fabulous, despite the oppressive heat.

And last but certainly not least, I can’t imagine life without my handkerchiefs.  What seems a forgotten novelty is actually the greenest way to make it through allergy season, or seasons, in Austin. It’s also a nice way to blot your makeup!
